چکیده

Detailed neuroanatomical information is an essential prerequisite for functional analysis of specific neurones in the central nervous system. In this investigation we have combined the dissection of single axons with cobalt-backfilling to reveal the structural organisation of a class of interganglionic giant interneurones in the central nervous system of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L). Each giant interneurone possesses a cell body, neurite and dendrites within the sixth abdominal ganglion and also has a giant axon which ascends the ventral nerve cord (Harris & Smyth, 1971). Cereal sensory neurones provide monosynaptic input to at least some giant inter-neurones (Callec et ah, 1974). Furthermore the cereal afferent, giant interneurone pathway has proved to be a useful system for quantitative pharmacology of putative A preparation consisting of the cereal nerves, the abdominal ganglia and their interganglionic connectives was excised from an adult male cockroach and transferred to a drop of saline on a microscope slide. A single giant axon was located and dissected under a binocular microscope (x 150 magnification), as previously described (Pichon & Callec, 1970; Hue, Pelhate & Chanelet, 1978), from one of the paired connectives linking either the fourth and fifth abdominal ganglia or the fifth and sixth abdominal ganglia. The dissected preparation was removed to a perspex chamber in which the cereal nerves and sixth abdominal ganglion were located in a compartment containing physiological saline of the following composition The isolated axon was immersed in a paraffin-oil channel which separated the saline from a compartment containing 2-5 % (w/v) cobaltous chloride in which the remainder of the abdominal nerve cord was submerged. The rate of cobalt penetration into those elements of a giant interneurone located in the sixth abdominal ganglion was influenced by temperature and applied current. For example, backfilling in preparations dissected midway between the fifth and sixth

Development of synapses between identified sensory neurones and giant interneurones in the cockroach Periplaneta americana.

The cercal afferent, giant interneurone pathway in Periplaneta americana was used as a model for synapse formation. The morphology of the two identified filiform hair sensory neurones (FHSNs) and of two giant interneurones (GI2 and GI3) was followed throughout embryogenesis by cobalt injection. The FHSN axons enter the CNS at the 45% stage of embryogenesis, branch at 50% and form complete arbor...

Morphology of identified cercal afferents and giant interneurones in the hatchling cockroach Periplaneta americana.

Cobalt backfills from the thoracic connectives of the hatchling Periplaneta americana allowed identification of giant interneurones in the terminal abdominal ganglion, morphologically comparable to GI 1, 2 and 3 in the adult. The bipolar neurone innervating each cercal filiform wind receptor hair is ultrastructurally similar to the adult cell and possesses an individually identifiable afferent ...

Short Communication Multimodality of Ocellar Interneurones of the American Cockroach

Many insects possess two or three dorsal ocelli in addition to the paired compound eyes. The dorsal ocellus is characterized by a high convergent ratio of many retinular axons upon several thick second-order neurones in the posterior region of the ocellus. The thick second-order neurones extend towards the brain as an ocellar nerve together with other thin processes, and their central projectio...

Structure and synaptic activation of the fast coxal depressor motoneurone of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana.

Now that behavioural descriptions of walking in the cockroach are available (Delcomyn, 1971) attempts are being made to elucidate the neuronal mechanisms involved in leg movements. Innervation of some of the muscles utilized in walking has been studied and the patterns of activity of motoneurones to both coxal levator and depressor muscles have been described in the intact, free-walking animal ...

The morphology and fine structure of the giant interneurons of the wood cricket Nemobius sylvestris.

The structural and ultrastructural characteristics of giant interneurons in the terminal abdominal ganglion of the cricket Nemobius sylvestris were investigated by means of cobalt and fluorescent dye backfilling and transmission electron microscopy. The projections of the 8 eight pairs of the biggest ascending interneurons (giant interneurons) are described in detail. The somata of all interneu...
